Novara, 9 February 2009 - Following the first meeting between the company and union representatives held on 20 January 2009, and on completion of the advisory phase required by the national collective bargaining agreement for the graphic arts and publishing sector, De Agostini Editore S.p.A. initiated negotiations with trade union organisations concerning the restructuring of a number of business areas, with the official start of legal proceedings.
For each company involved in the restructuring plan, the company advised the number of redundancies to be made in the following business areas: cartography, instalment sales, works sold as inserts, partworks, direct marketing, books and service areas of the sub-holding company De Agostini Editore S.p.A. The restructuring plan, which will not affect the school texts publishing area, will involve a total of 237 redundancies.
The plan is essential to allow the company to redefine its presence in the publishing market and thus improve the performance of the areas most heavily affected by the crisis. In light of the results of individual businesses, the shareholders and top management of De Agostini Editore believe that the decision to initiate a comprehensive company restructuring plan can no longer be postponed.
Another meeting will be held between De Agostini Editore S.p.A. and national, regional and company trade union organisations on 12 February, which will mark the beginning of union negotiations. The company intends to have a reasoned, transparent discussion with its counterparty to determine possible areas of agreement in order to minimise the social impact of this painful but inevitable restructuring.
